A planned community, or planned city, is any community that was carefully planned from from the start and is usually constructed in a previously undeveloped area. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and deteriorating living conditions are some of the reasons to decongest industrialized urban cities to new and well planned towns which has all amenities to be self-sufficient.
Most towns and cities in the Philippines developed from Spanish era settlements without proper urban planning. With the growing population in urban centers, there is a need to develop new towns in order to spread the development to undeveloped areas.
Master-planned communities in the Philippines are nothing new. In fact, Quezon City, one of the country’s biggest city and was once its capital, was a planned city by then President Manuel L. Quezon.

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) is one of the first planned growth center in the country. The entire district used to be part of the Philippine Army Camp but was developed in 1995 by Bonifacio Land Development Corporation (BLDC) in partnership with the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA). BGC now has business offices, shopping centers, churches, schools and hospital.
